Dr. Matthew Pawley

Mat has completed degrees in Biology B.Sc./M.Sc. and a Ph.D in biostatistics. He has studied and worked as a numerical ecologist and retrained as a statistician at the post-graduate level. He has substantial consulting experience in environmental modelling, non-linear regression and sampling design.

His research interests and statistical specialities are in spatial data analysis with particular emphasis on:

  • Clarifying issues of inference, and developing efficient sampling strategies for geographic (autocorrelated) data
  • Model-based and Design-based sampling methodology
  • Development of new systematic sampling (SYS) standard error calculations
  • Kriging

Teaching

He has been tutoring, lecturing and providing many general access workshops in University statistics since 1998. He is particularly adept at conveying statistical concepts to statistically naïve audiences.
